How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT

How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT

When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a business like yours, what happens?

Imagine a homeowner asking ChatGPT to recommend a roofing contractor in their area. Or a business owner looking for a warehouse space. Maybe it’s someone searching for a local attorney, healthcare provider, or storage facility.

These are the kinds of questions people can now ask AI instead of starting with a traditional Google search.

For business owners, there’s an obvious question: How do I get my company included in those recommendations?

The answer isn’t as simple as adding a few keywords to your website. But there are practical things you can do to improve how your business is represented online.

First, Understand Where ChatGPT Gets Its Information

ChatGPT doesn’t maintain a single, permanent directory of businesses that it recommends.

Depending on the question and the features being used, it may draw on information learned during training, retrieve information from the web, or use available search and business data.

That means recommendations aren’t necessarily the same for every user or every search.

It also means you can’t simply submit your company to ChatGPT and expect to appear whenever someone asks for a recommendation.

What you can do is improve the information available about your business.

Make It Obvious What Your Business Does

This sounds basic, but take a look at your homepage.

Does it clearly explain what you offer, who you serve, and where you operate?

Or does it open with something vague like “Innovative Solutions for a Better Tomorrow”?

That kind of messaging might look polished, but it doesn’t tell a prospective customer much.

Consider a plumbing company whose homepage says:

“Providing exceptional service and quality solutions since 2005.”

Now compare that with:

“Residential and commercial plumbing services in Fort Myers, including drain cleaning, water heater replacement, and emergency repairs.”

The second description is more useful to customers and provides clearer information for search systems.

You don’t need to repeat the same keywords throughout your website. You need to explain your services in language people actually use.

Build Pages Around Specific Services

If your business offers five distinct services, don’t bury them all in one paragraph.

Give important services their own pages, especially when customers search for them independently.

A law firm might have separate pages for estate planning, probate, and business formation. A home services company might separate installation, repair, and maintenance.

Each page should explain the service, who needs it, where it’s available, and how to get started.

Use real examples where appropriate. Answer common questions. Explain what makes your approach different.

This helps potential customers make decisions and gives search systems more specific information about your business.

Pay Attention to What Other Websites Say About You

Your website isn’t the only source of information about your company.

Business directories, industry associations, professional profiles, review platforms, and local publications can all contribute to your online presence.

Start by checking whether your business name, website, location, and contact information are accurate across important listings.

Look for outdated descriptions or services you no longer offer.

If you belong to professional associations or have legitimate industry credentials, make sure that information is accessible and accurate.

Don’t buy questionable directory listings or manufacture mentions simply to influence AI. Focus on sources that would genuinely help a customer evaluate your business.

Answer the Questions Customers Ask Before Hiring You

Think about your last five sales calls.

What did people want to know?

How much does the service cost? How long does it take? Do you serve their area? What happens after they contact you?

Those questions can become some of your most useful website content.

You don’t need to publish a separate blog post for every question. Often, the best place for an answer is directly on the relevant service page.

Be specific. If pricing depends on several factors, explain those factors instead of publishing a meaningless range.

Helpful content should make someone more informed, even if they don’t contact you immediately.

Test Your Visibility, But Don’t Obsess Over One Answer

Try asking ChatGPT questions that resemble real customer searches.

For example:

  • “Who provides commercial HVAC maintenance in Fort Myers?”
  • “What marketing agencies specialize in local lead generation?”
  • “Where can I find small warehouse space for lease near Greenville?”

Review the businesses mentioned and any cited sources.

Then change the wording and repeat the exercise. Try other AI search tools as well.

If your company doesn’t appear, don’t immediately assume something is wrong. Results can vary based on context, available sources, and the question itself.

Instead, look for patterns. Are competitors providing clearer service descriptions? Do they have stronger location pages? Are they mentioned by relevant third-party sources?

Those findings can help identify worthwhile improvements.

Getting Mentioned Isn’t the Same as Getting a Customer

It’s easy to get caught up in whether ChatGPT mentions your business.

But a recommendation only matters if it helps someone find the information they need and take the next step.

Your website still needs to be easy to use. Your contact information needs to be accurate. Your service pages need to answer real questions.

And your marketing should still be measured by qualified inquiries, appointments, and customers, not just visibility.

AI search is another opportunity to be discovered. It’s not a replacement for the fundamentals of good marketing.
